Rubric
A rubric is a single entry in a repertory, representing a specific symptom or symptom characteristic along with the remedies known to be associated with it. Rubrics are the fundamental building blocks of repertory-based prescribing and the units that practitioners work with during repertorization.

A typical rubric is structured as a hierarchical path that moves from general to specific. For example, the rubric "Stomach; nausea; morning; rising, on" describes nausea that occurs in the morning specifically upon rising. Listed beneath each rubric are the remedies linked to that symptom, displayed in graded levels indicating strength of association; exact formatting varies by repertory and software.
Selecting the right rubrics is one of the most skill-dependent aspects of homeopathic prescribing. A practitioner must translate the patient's natural language — "my headache gets worse when I bend down" — into the appropriate repertory rubric, such as "Head; pain; stooping, from." Different repertories may express the same symptom using different rubric paths, so familiarity with multiple repertory systems is valuable.
Rubrics vary enormously in size. Some contain hundreds of remedies (broad symptoms like "Anxiety"), while others list only a handful (highly specific symptoms like "Desire for smoked food"). Smaller, more specific rubrics tend to be more differentiating and clinically useful, as they help distinguish one remedy from another. Practitioners often combine several well-chosen rubrics during repertorization to find the remedies that appear across multiple characteristic symptoms.
The grading system within a rubric reflects the strength of association between the symptom and each remedy. These grades derive from proving data, clinical confirmations, and toxicological reports accumulated over two centuries of practice.
