Acute Prescribing

Acute prescribing is the selection of a remedy for a sudden-onset, self-limiting condition — such as an injury, fever, acute infection, or emotional shock. It is distinguished from constitutional prescribing by its focus on the immediate symptom picture rather than the patient's long-term constitutional pattern.

In Practice

In acute prescribing, the relevant symptom picture develops rapidly and is typically vivid. A child with sudden high fever, flushed face, and dilated pupils presents a recognizable picture. A patient who falls and develops bruising presents another. The practitioner's task is to match these acute symptoms — including their modalities — to the most closely corresponding remedy.

Because acute conditions are time-limited, the prescribing process is faster and more focused than in constitutional work. The practitioner concentrates on what has changed since the person became unwell: onset pattern, specific sensations, factors that make symptoms better or worse, and any mental or emotional shifts.

Several well-known polychrest remedies are commonly referenced in acute settings. Our First Aid Kit guide covers the most frequently used acute remedies.

Practitioners select remedies based on the presenting acute symptoms and may adjust potency and frequency based on the case. For dosage concepts, see Potency Guide.

Acute prescribing is the most accessible form of homeopathic practice and the entry point for many families who begin using remedies at home. Conditions that are severe, recurrent, or slow to resolve are best managed by an experienced practitioner.

Historical Context

Hahnemann addressed acute diseases in the Organon of Medicine, distinguishing them from chronic miasmatic disease. He recognized that acute conditions present with characteristic, intense symptom pictures well suited to rapid remedy identification. The tradition of acute prescribing later formed the basis of popular home prescribing guides from the 19th century onward.
