Direction of Cure

The direction of cure — often called Hering's Law — describes the observable patterns of genuine healing: symptoms tend to move from more vital organs to less vital ones, from inside outward, from above downward, and to resolve in the reverse order of their original appearance. Practitioners use these observations to evaluate whether a remedy is acting curatively or whether the disease process is moving deeper.

In Practice

After prescribing a remedy, the practitioner watches for signs that healing is proceeding favorably. If a patient whose eczema clears while old joint stiffness briefly returns, for instance, this movement — from skin outward while revisiting a prior complaint — is generally considered a positive sign.

Conversely, if a skin condition clears but the patient develops deeper internal symptoms or increased anxiety, this inward movement suggests suppression rather than cure. A curative direction calls for patience and observation, while an inward shift may require a change in approach.

The return of old symptoms in reverse chronological order is another hallmark. Patients occasionally re-experience symptoms from years ago — briefly and mildly — as deeper healing unfolds. Understanding this pattern helps both practitioner and patient interpret the process without alarm. For a comprehensive exploration, see The Direction of Cure.

Historical Context

These observations are attributed to Constantine Hering (1800-1880), one of the founders of American homeopathy. While Hering did not formalize them into a single written law, his clinical observations were compiled by later authors into the framework now known as Hering's Law. The concept builds on Hahnemann's understanding of the vital force and its orderly response to the correct remedy.
